Profound hits $1.8 billion valuation in new round

The AI search marketing startup raised $180 million less than seven months after its last round as brands push to stay visible in AI answers.

Profound, a startup that helps brands appear in AI search results, has raised a $180 million Series D at a $1.8 billion valuation. The round came less than seven months after its previous $96 million Series C, a sign of how quickly investor interest is building around tools tied to AI-driven search. As IT-PUB News notes, the company is pitching itself at a moment when brands are scrambling to understand how they show up in generative search tools. Profound says the new funding will help it expand beyond analytics into a broader platform for marketing research and strategy.

The round was led by Sequoia and Kleiner Perkins, with participation from existing backers including Lightspeed Venture Partners, Khosla Ventures, and South Park Commons.

Brands want a place in AI-generated answers

Profound launched two years ago with a focus on analytics. Since then, it has widened its scope, helping companies research and shape marketing strategies around how people discover brands through AI systems.

That shift matters because search behavior is changing. Consumers are no longer relying only on traditional search engines to find products and services; more of that discovery is happening through AI tools. Profound is trying to help businesses track and understand how their brands appear in those systems.

The company operates in what it calls the GEO/AEO space — short for generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization. In practice, that means helping brands adjust their online presence so they can surface in AI-powered answers and search results.

Profound returned for funding less than seven months later

The pace of this raise is one of the clearest reasons it stands out. Profound closed a $96 million Series C less than seven months ago, and it is already back with a larger round at a valuation well above the $1 billion mark.

A quick follow-on raise can point to strong investor confidence, especially in a category that is still taking shape. In Profound’s case, the timing also reflects how fast companies are moving to secure a position in AI search as it becomes more important to online discovery.

At $1.8 billion, Profound now ranks among the more heavily funded startups in this emerging market, even if the market itself is still new. That makes it a notable example of how AI-related infrastructure is drawing capital beyond the companies building the models themselves.

More than 1,000 enterprise customers are on the platform

Profound said its revenue has grown 3x over the past six months. The company also said it now has more than 1,000 enterprise customers.

Those customers include Comcast, The Estée Lauder Companies, and Walmart. The roster suggests the platform is being used not just by digital-native businesses, but also by large established brands that need to monitor how they appear in AI-generated search experiences.

For businesses, that visibility can shape how customers discover products, compare options, and make purchasing decisions. For Profound, the growth in enterprise adoption helps support its pitch to investors that AI search optimization is becoming a real budget line, not just a niche experiment.

AI discovery is creating a new marketing category

Profound is part of a wider group of startups trying to help companies show up in the AI systems people increasingly use for search. The category includes tools focused on generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization, both aimed at influencing how brands are represented when AI models respond to user queries.

There is opportunity in that shift, but also uncertainty. Companies get a new way to understand and manage how they are found online, yet they also have to adapt to a search environment that works differently from traditional web search.

Profound’s rapid fundraising suggests investors see that change as significant. It also points to a market that is getting more competitive as startups and established players alike build tools for the same problem: helping brands stay visible when AI becomes the first stop for discovery.
