Huawei moves Ascend 960DT launch to Q1 2027

Huawei says the Ascend 960DT AI chip will arrive two quarters earlier than expected as it pushes bigger AI systems and competes with Nvidia.
Huawei has moved up the launch of its next-generation Ascend 960DT AI chip to the first quarter of 2027. The updated timeline was announced at Huawei Connect as the company tries to strengthen its position against Nvidia in the fast-moving AI chip market.
The shift stands out because the chip had previously been expected in the third quarter of 2027. Huawei says the new schedule reflects faster progress on its Ascend line, but the announcement also prompted fresh scrutiny of the scale of the AI systems the company is building around it.
Huawei pulls the Ascend 960DT schedule forward
A Huawei spokesperson said the Ascend 960DT is now expected to be ready in Q1 2027. The spokesperson said the Ascend 960 chips are “launching ahead of schedule,” and added that performance is being doubled year by year.
Huawei said David Wang, the company’s rotating and acting chairman, announced the revised timeline during Huawei Connect on Thursday. As IT-PUB News notes, the earlier launch points to a faster AI hardware roadmap at a time when competition in the sector remains intense.
For Huawei, the chip is not just a standalone product. It is part of a broader effort to build more powerful computing systems for AI training and inference — the stages where AI models are developed and then put to use.
Huawei wants to connect vast numbers of chips
Huawei is also working on what it calls Peerium Computing Architecture. The company says the approach is meant to turn hundreds of thousands, and eventually millions, of AI chips into one large computer.
The system relies on UnifiedBus, Huawei’s technology for linking processors with memory, storage, and networking hardware. In Huawei’s statement, Eric Xu, the company’s rotating chairman, said the architecture is being used to build larger AI computing systems for both training and inference.
The first systems based on that architecture are the Atlas 950 SuperPoD and SuperCluster. Huawei says the Atlas 950 SuperCluster can connect up to 256,000 accelerator cards.
That matters because Huawei is not only trying to make chips. It is also trying to build the infrastructure needed to tie them into much larger systems. In AI, that can be just as important as the chip itself, especially for companies training large models or running demanding workloads.
The new system size still raises questions
Even with the faster chip timeline, questions remain about Huawei’s broader AI plans. China tech analyst Rui Ma pointed out on X that Huawei had previously said its Atlas 960 SuperPoD would scale to 15,488 Ascend 960 chips.
This week’s announcement, however, referred to a system with 4,096 chips. Ma highlighted the gap between the earlier figure and the newer one, writing that the chip is arriving “WAY earlier,” but that the SuperPoD Huawei announced is much smaller than what the company had originally described.
The difference suggests Huawei’s progress may not be moving at the same speed across every part of its AI stack. Bringing the chip forward is a clear milestone, but the size and scale of the surrounding systems still appear to be unsettled.
The update comes as U.S.-China pressure builds
Huawei’s AI chip update also came a week before U.S. President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are due to meet on September 24 in Washington, DC.
That timing gives the announcement extra significance, even though Huawei did not present it as a political move. The company has kept pushing its chip ambitions despite U.S. restrictions on China’s access to advanced semiconductor technology.
Rui Ma said those restrictions are unlikely to stop China from developing its own semiconductor sector. She argued that the drive for self-sufficiency is too important for China to abandon, saying it would be “futile” to try to stop that development.
The backdrop is a wider contest over AI leadership. Trump has pushed back against calls from AI industry leaders to slow development over safety concerns, arguing that the U.S. needs to maintain its lead over China. Xu, meanwhile, has said China needs to speed up AI development to catch up with the U.S., and that Chinese companies need more progress before they can fully understand and address the risks of more powerful AI systems, according to Financial Times.
For Huawei, moving up the Ascend 960DT is another sign that it wants to stay in that race. But the company is likely to be judged not just on chip launch dates, but on whether it can deliver the larger AI systems it has laid out.
