Anthropic launches Claude Duet for work

The new AI agent targets professionals and small businesses, handling tasks in the background while requiring approval for sensitive actions.

Anthropic has entered the crowded AI assistant market with Claude Duet, a new app aimed at professionals and small businesses rather than personal errands. The launch stands out because it reflects a broader shift in AI: companies are moving beyond chatbots that answer questions and toward agents that can carry out tasks on a user’s behalf. Anthropic is also setting clear boundaries around what Duet is supposed to do. It is focused on work-related automation, not things like booking tickets or handling everyday chores.

Anthropic is aiming Duet at workplace tasks

According to Anthropic, Claude Duet is designed to help users manage and automate tasks in a professional setting. The app can create daily briefings, generate dashboards, and suggest actions based on a user’s data.

That puts it in a different category from personal assistants built around simple consumer tasks. Anthropic specifically contrasts Duet with personal agents such as Instinct, saying Duet is not intended for errands or travel bookings.

The distinction matters because it shows how AI products are becoming more specialized. Rather than trying to do everything, vendors are increasingly tailoring agents to a specific audience and use case. Here, the target is people who need help organizing work and making decisions faster.

The agent works in the background

One of Duet’s main features is that it can keep working while the user does something else. Anthropic says the agent can complete tasks in the background through its own virtual machine, then return to the user if approval is needed.

That is a key difference between an agent and a more ordinary chatbot. Duet is not limited to answering prompts in a conversation. It is meant to continue working on a task, monitor progress, and bring back recommendations on its own.

Anthropic says Duet does this by watching ongoing tasks and delivering suggestions without waiting for every prompt. For professionals and small businesses, that could mean less time spent on repetitive coordination and more time spent reviewing the results.

At the same time, Anthropic is careful not to present the system as fully autonomous. Sensitive steps still require user approval, keeping some control with the person using it.

Claude Opus 5.5 powers Duet and connects it to business tools

Claude Duet is built on Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5 model. The app can connect to more than 6,000 connectors and plugins in the Claude Marketplace, giving it access to a wide range of external services.

Anthropic also says Duet can make online purchases for users through Stripe’s Link digital wallet or Shopify’s Shop Pay. That could make it more useful in business workflows, but it also raises the stakes, as IT-PUB News notes, because any system that can take action on a user’s behalf needs clear limits.

The company says those limits are built in. Sensitive actions such as payments require approval, and Duet will not trade securities or move money between accounts. Anthropic is positioning the agent as helpful, but not as a tool that can independently handle higher-risk financial activity.

That line may matter for users who want automation without giving up oversight.

Anthropic adds a filter for sensitive data

Alongside Duet, Anthropic introduced a new classifier designed to check each message and help prevent sensitive information from leaking out. The company said the agent will, by default, refuse requests for credit card numbers and government identification.

This is one of the more notable parts of the launch because it shows Anthropic is thinking not only about what the agent can do, but also about what it should not do. As AI tools become more capable, the risk is not just that they make mistakes. It is also that they are asked to handle information they should never process in the first place.

The added classifier is Anthropic’s attempt to reduce that risk. It does not remove the issue entirely, but it shows that data handling and safety remain central concerns for AI products that can access business tools and act on behalf of users.

Claude Duet joins a market shifting toward agents

Claude Duet arrives as the AI market continues to move in this direction. The source notes that the field is shifting beyond assistants and toward agents that can work for users instead of simply responding to them.

Anthropic is not alone in making that move. The company’s rivals are also focusing on business use cases. Meta’s Muse has a personal assistant version, but it also has a version aimed at small businesses with links to other apps. OpenAI’s Dots also has a business focus, including integration with professional tools.

That broader trend helps explain why Duet is drawing attention. The competition is no longer just about which assistant can chat more naturally. It is about which service can connect to the most tools, take the most useful actions, and still stay safe enough for work.

For users, that could mean more automation in routine tasks and faster access to information. For businesses, it could mean another layer of software helping coordinate work across systems. It also means greater reliance on agents that can see data, make suggestions, and in some cases carry out purchases.

Access is limited for now

Claude Duet is available as an app on iOS and Android, and on the web through Claude.ai. For now, it is being offered in research preview to Pro and Max customers, and users must join a waitlist to try it.

That makes this more of an early test than a full-scale rollout. Anthropic is giving selected users access first, suggesting the company is still gathering feedback and refining the product before a wider release.

Even so, the launch shows where Anthropic wants to compete. With Duet, the company is betting that the next stage of AI adoption will be less about conversation and more about useful action, especially in work settings where time, oversight, and data security matter most.
